SACIT - Sustainable Arts and Crafts Institute of Thailand (Public Organization) or SACIT, is an organization whose development traces back to the unwavering royal determination of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, The Queen Mother, who recognized the profound value of Thai handicraft arts and the importance of generating income and improving the quality of life for rural communities. Her vision centered on enabling people to make a living through their local skills and wisdom, as well as providing market channels so that Thai arts and crafts could endure as a national heritage and serve as a key mechanism for developing the country's grassroots economy.
In pursuit of this vision, the government established the SUPPORT Arts and Crafts International Centre of Thailand (Public Organization) (SACICT), under the supervision of the Ministry of Commerce, in 2003
Subsequently, the organization underwent institutional reform, and the Royal Decree Establishing Sustainable Arts and Crafts Institute of Thailand (Public Organization) B.E. 2564 came into legal effect on 14 July 2021. The organization was renamed the Sustainable Arts and Crafts Institute of Thailand (Public Organization) (SACIT), remaining under the supervision of the Ministry of Commerce. Its objectives and mission were revised, along with the composition of the Institute's Board and various related provisions, in order to expand its mandate to encompass the sustainable driving of the creative economy — enabling the Institute to promote and support Thai arts and crafts and to support entrepreneurs more effectively "from upstream to downstream."
The Institute has continuously developed into the primary agency overseeing and advancing the entire Thai handicraft ecosystem — preserving and perpetuating Thai cultural wisdom while harmonizing cultural value with economic development in a balanced and sustainable manner.
The Institute operates as a "craftsman" — shaping and supporting Thai arts and crafts across all dimensions — guided by three core principles:
Preserve: To conserve and transmit the wisdom of the nation's master artisans to new generations, while honoring the National Living Treasures, master craftspeople, and skilled artisans across various disciplines — ensuring that traditional knowledge remains alive and is not lost to time. The Institute also opens spaces for younger generations to learn, appreciate, and engage with Thai handicrafts.
Create: To develop quality and standards, and to encourage the integration of technology, innovation, creative thinking, and local wisdom in order to develop and elevate Thai handicraft products — making them a meaningful part of contemporary lifestyles that respond to today's market demands, while retaining the beautiful essence of Thai identity.
Promote: To empower entrepreneurs, artisans, and craft communities across the country to grow stronger, by opening market opportunities both domestically and internationally — adding value and expanding business prospects so that Thai arts and crafts can compete on a global stage. This includes creating new platforms and opportunities through exhibitions, trade shows, and diverse creative activities that bring Thai handicrafts closer to new generations, inspire society to recognize the value of Thai craftsmanship, and elevate Thai handicraft arts to international recognition.
